In the world of business, many things can occur to make your company more profitable. For instance, you can offer better prices, invest in technology, or create better quality products. Of course, whatever you do, it’s a time-consuming and challenging process. However, one area that matters is sales. Without sales, it doesn’t matter what you have going on—you won’t make money. In short, almost isn’t good enough. So, I want to share sales tips for success that will help guide you to master sales.
The reality is I’ve been in sales since I was a kid in high school, working in a work-study program. During those days selling shoes, I realized how vital sales were to business. As a result, today, I have many brands, and I’m in the process of re-launching a marketing company. My message to you today is the following. If I could do it, so can you.
1. Promote Yourself and Your Brand
Promoting yourself is a vital part of any business and sales in the current era. Of course, it’s challenging to stand out in a saturated market. However, there’s no getting around it. You have to promote yourself as the leader. People want to trust the brands they patronize. And that means building a relationship. So, make it a point to promote yourself as the leader of your company. What’s more, you could get your team members to lead the effort with you.
When I was starting my social enterprise, Funds2Orgs, in 2012, I spent a lot of time front and center. In the decade since that brand became the nation’s leader in shoe drive fundraising for sustainability, I’ve created several more brands. All the while, I did everything I could as an entrepreneur to lead my team to success. And one of the critical things we never dropped was the need for sales.
I don’t know why people have such an aversion to sales. The reality is that everyone’s selling all the time. If you try to convince someone to see your point of view, that’s sales. Moreover, the best salespeople learn soft skills to make them empathetic people. As you’ll see in the next sales tip, that soft skill makes you a better person and professional.
2. Be a Good Listener for Sales Mastery
One of the most important things you could do for sales is listen. As a business owner, you have to meet with potential clients and discuss their needs. A big part of this process is listening to what they say and understanding their needs. Good listeners can identify customer problems and tailor their products or services accordingly. Unfortunately, many people in sales don’t listen. They’re too busy coming up with solutions—frustrating the lead.
Let’s assume you wanted to sell a car. You could ask your client questions like, “What kind of car are you looking for?” “How much money are you looking to spend?” “Do you want a hatchback or an SUV?” These questions help you figure out what type of car best suits your client’s needs. It’s essential to practice active listening. Aside from being one of the sales tips for success, it’s a great life skill many people don’t nurture.
3. Sell Your Products to Customers Who Want Them
One of the easiest things to improve sales is selling your products to people interested in what you have to offer. When you spend time and money on marketing, ads must target the right people. If you advertise for a higher-priced item, it’s a waste of time and money to target people making less than $100,000 a year.
And if you want customers interested in your clothing line, then target people who care about fashion. Unfortunately, this simple sales tip for success often gets missed. Many business owners miss how to promote in the digital era. So, they don’t do it at all or don’t do it right. The reality is you must invest in people who know how to market and target the right audience for your product or services.
4. Strengthen Business Relationships for Inevitable Sales
Relationships are essential in business and life, of course. However, business relationships go beyond incentivizing people to boost your sales. Concerning sales, one of the simplest ways to strengthen business relationships is to provide freebies or discounts to your customers. But, whether when you offer a freebie or a deal, you need to make sure the lead will likely use it.
When the pandemic hit the U.S., our team reached out to our customers and past partners. We weren’t looking at sales. What we were looking to do was to reach out people to people. It made a difference. One of the reasons I believe our social enterprises survived was because people knew we cared. Strong business relationships lead to sales because people trust you.
5. Give Back to the Community
One of the easiest things you can do for your business is give back to the community. When you do this, it improves the public’s perception of your company. Of course, it also creates brand awareness and a positive reputation. In turn, it helps you attract new customers looking for a company that contributes to society and produces high-quality products.
Giving back could mean many things. Many ways exist to show your community that you care about social good. For instance, you could create a corporate social responsibility (CSR) program by recycling sneakers. Or, you could ask your team to do a day of service volunteering at a local nonprofit. Make no mistake; social responsibility is good for business and can boost sales for your company.
Never Rest and Always Do Better
One of the sales tips for success that you should master is the ability never to rest. You must always make sure to do better than last time. It can apply to anything from your product quality or customer experience to how your team treats each other. If you don’t set a high bar and constantly push yourself to improve, you’ll never get better.
