Guerilla Marketing and Other Unconventional Strategies

As people remember, there was a time when flash mobs were a big deal. It was lots of fun to watch videos taken by spectators as people went about their routines, and suddenly, boom, out of nowhere, there was a mob of people dancing. It worked, was loads of fun, and captivated people because it was unexpected. And that’s the essence of guerilla marketing.

There’s a way for every business to go beyond the same-old marketing and shift tactics to unconventional strategies. One of those ways is guerilla marketing because it captures your audience with the element of surprise and leaves a lasting impression. So, what tactics can you use? Simple. Everything from viral videos to pop-up art. The aim is to surprise.

The fact is that today’s audience is sophisticated, and they don’t like to be marketed or sold to from brands. So, it’s up to brands to come up with surprising ways that allows them to engage their audiences in more meaningful ways that go beyond what they’ve seen in the past. This article will dive into strategies and ideas for unconventional marketing.

1.     Guerilla marketing

It’s been around for a while, but there’s a reason for the staying power of guerilla marketing. In short, it’s a low-cost and high-impact way to generate buzz and engage with your audience. Guerilla marketing is all about the unexpected and random, so think about activities akin to flash mobs. Of course, if that’s not your thing, there are plenty of other ways to do guerilla marketing. For example, you could create a pop-up installation in your city. You could also create an unexpected event at your next event or a smaller venue like a school.

2.     Experiential Marketing

As I mentioned earlier, no one wants to get sold or marketed these days. However, something that people do want to do is to have awesome experiences. So, think about ways to immerse your audience in something memorable. For instance, if you run a running retail store, you could provide your customers with a VR experience. Of course, there are more unconventional strategies for experiential marketing, such as workshops, weekend experiences, pop-up shops, and other interactive events you could do in the real and digital worlds.

3.     Gamification

Want to know why everything is gamified these days? It’s because it works, and nearly 200 million Americans play video games. People want entertainment, and gamification in marketing offers a fresh approach to your efforts. So, some things you can do to gamify your marketing include competitions, rewards, and consumer challenges. Consider integrating loyalty programs, virtual events, treasure hunts, and other digital experiences to influence your audience to join others in having fun and maybe even competing in your community.

4.     Storydoing and not storytelling

Every successful entrepreneur knows that they have to tell a good story, but they also know that it goes beyond talk. In other words, storytelling is essential, but there’s got to be a focus on action. So, instead of talking about your values and the impact you make, why not focus on storydoing? For example, look to take action in socially conscious marketing campaigns that drive change, such as getting paid for sneaker recycling while giving people a place to recycle the sneakers they don’t need anymore.

5.     Breaking taboos

There’s another marketing approach that could work well for your brand if you execute it well, and that’s breaking taboos. In short, coming up with ideas that spark conversations. Get inspired by brands like The Girls Network, Tangle Teezer, and others that rewrote the narratives that still need to change so everyone can live a life of peace, respect, and equality. Although we’re enlightened, there’s still a long way to go to challenge norms and give consumers something to think about for a better world.

6.     Reverse marketing

There’s another unconventional way to flip the script with reverse marketing. In this approach, you empower your audience to pursue your brand. So, instead of promoting your messages, you invite your audience to share theirs. For example, think of creating a campaign with a relevant hashtag that resonates and aligns with your work. Then, ask your target audience to share their stories and experiences related to that topic. Dove’s Real Beauty campaign and others are examples of getting audiences involved instead of the brand leading the charge.

7.     Unexpected alliances

Ever thought of forging alliances and collaborations with others? If not, this is another powerful marketing tool in unconventional strategies. Look around your community. Who can you partner with as an unexpected ally? Creating strategic partnerships allows you to tap into a new audience and get people talking about your brand. Think out of the box. Consider an affiliation with any organization that’s within, and even outside, of your industry. All you have to do is align around a specific topic, like fighting climate change.

Embracing unconventional marketing ideas

As we know, today’s business landscape is never static. As a result, companies must embrace unconventional strategies, such as guerilla marketing and the other marketing approaches highlighted in this article, to provide the public with a memorable experience. Doing so allows you to genuinely engage your audience and foster an emotional connection that leads to long-term success.
